Tips for winter clothing

I spend a lot of time outside in the winter,
and have some tips FWIW on clothing that helps to make that season more comfortable.
Of course, the basics are several good shells (for wind, rain, and a lightweight one for moderate conditions)
and a good pair of mittens for maximum hand warmth and durability.
But beyond those obvious items,
here are some that are perhaps not so obvious:

A heavyweight base layer,
e.g., this EMS Men's Heavyweight 1/2 Zip
http://www.ems.com/product/index.jsp?productId=32805996.
I really like this product,
it fits snugly under a shirt but packs the warmth of a sweatshirt.
With a thin polyster base layer, this heavyweight base layer, and an LL Bean flannel shirt,
I am quite comfortable while walking at a moderate pace in temperatures as low as 30F.

For keeping hands warm, two very useful products are from Smartwool:
the Liner Gloves, very thin wool, are terrific for those days in the 60s (F).
Their "Cozy Flip Mitts" handle with aplomb days in the 50s,
and wearing both (I use Medium Liner Gloves and the Large/XL Flip Mitt)
will take you down to 40 with comfort.
