2014-02-27:
This warship, scheduled for IOC (initial operating capability) in 2016,
features two major new technologies:
its tumblehome hull and
its capability for new offensive weapons such as high-tech guns, lasers, and rail guns.
It will be interesting to see how these new technologies work out in practice.
In particular, the tumblehome hull has been criticized by some
as making the ship quite vulnerable to rough sea conditions.
See, for example,
http://www.phisicalpsience.com/public/Tumblehome_Hull_DDG-1000/Tumblehome_Hull_DDG-1000.html.

I certainly hope these fears are not realized,
and all the new technologies work as the Navy hopes.
But as with any new technology, surprises may be expected.
Again, it will be interesting to see how things work out.

I like the twirly-jig thing on top of the deckhouse.
It reminds me of the propellerhead beanies that nerds were always accused of wearing when I was young.

(History of the propellerhead.)
